Artist's Comments

Poster Art for the opening of Coast City Comics in Portland Maine... I am actually having a small showing there during the opening June 13th! ;)

I am gonna open up critiques on this... I may take a beating but then again I was definitely working outside my comfort zone... I learned a lot and well I'd like to learn more... so have at it ;)

Critiques

:iconbolognafingers:
It's great getting out of your comfort zone but scary when you do, so I commend you on trying something new. The first thing that I noticed was how straight his front leg is. I'm sure this just slipped by you, but the lower part of the leg should have a slight offset from the upper portion. The next thing that I see is the position of his back arm, you could probably get it into that position but it looks a little bit unnatural, I think it might look better angled upward. The last thing is more about the design, the spacing and size of the three bursts of energy and his back arm are all pretty much the same. I think that if you varied the size and the dimensions of those elements that your overall design would be stronger.
I like the composition and the inking techniques that you used, I'd really like to see you experiment with more illustrations in this direction.

I dig it!!!
Be careful with your anatomy though, his right leg seems a little thin!
Great illustration, my friend!!! ;)

I did a very similar drawing, and as much as we want to follow the rules for perspective on a piece like this, sometimes you gotta take a bit of artistic license and just eye ball it to make it right..... it's kinda like using photo reference as the guide to wht you'll be drawing but not drawing it exactly how you see it, you know?

Good stuff, I think making that leg larger in photoshop will do it justice and then it'll be perfect!=]

His right leg is kinda skinny, and the perspective on the other one seems a little extreme compared to his fist. Actually, I feel pretty silly criticizing your stuff, since it's about a million times better than anything I could do. The new, grungy inking style is really phenomenal.

ok i am no expert and definetely not even in the same league with you but aside from the leg's thinness the left fist is bigger than the perspective and his own body proportions suggests :D
the overall shading looks very solid just as with every piece by you
the design and originality is great

i had to say it
now that i have said it i am gonna run for my life :P

cheers man

Great illustration. I agree with '=spiderguile' -- his upper thigh should have more muscle. I would also look at his left hand and wrist -- they seem to be a little too large. It's excellent stuff though. I also have problems with foreshortening.

It came to me; the whole Story unfolded as I lay half twisted, half-clothed, and a Cigarette in my right hand.

ill agree with everyone elses critique, this came out really nice aside from the slimness of the leg, could def use some beefing up. be careful with the white protruding from the body, it gets alittle grey so it might not reproduce but you can always just drop the levels in photoshop. i was gonna ask anyway, what did you use for the white in that area, really cool effect.
:iconmikefasano:
... meaning what did you use to apply the white?*
:iconjss13:
How you handled the background really takes this picture somewhere more than i think a more traditional background would have.
